When I first started out writing I had this idea that I should steer clear of politics. Even though I consider myself a political person, I don't always feel like I know enough to talk about the complexities of current issues.
At the beginning of writing this story, I wanted it to be more personal, focusing on one person's journey and struggles. But as I developed their story and the things happening around them, I realized that in order to tell the story I wanted and touch on the things I cared about it always ended up being connected to "politics" in some way. Avoiding it altogether just made the story, world, and characters less interesting and less “real”. Looking back at the sci-fi and fantasy I've read and watched, I realized that everything is somehow connected to politics.
This part of the story was actually inspired by a real event that made me see the world in a different light. It touches on something personal to me and my situation but it’s connected to the world in some way or another. I’m sure there are more subtle ways of telling this, but then again I don’t feel the real world is particularly subtle at the moment either…
(I promise not every part of this comic will be as in your face as this 😬)
